Our History
Since the Beginning
Bonsai Design has been designing and installing world-class adventure challenge courses - including zip-lines and canopy tours -- since 1992.
Owner John Walker began in the adventure challenge industry as a facilitator, seeing firsthand what types of challenge course elements worked best with participants. While studying at the University of Colorado, John spent his summers being mentored by S.T.E.P.S. owner David Brassfield, and rebuilt a fallen outdoor education program at Camp Tamarack in Ortonville, MI.
Over the next few years, he rebuilt dilapidated forest structures in one of the largest summer camps in the nation - including a dynamic high course, an elaborate static course with over 17 different elements, various tree courses, and a zip line.
John’s expertise is in designing and building tree courses, dealing with natural obstacles, such as rivers and lakes, and building creative, ambitious structures.
Our courses speak for themselves
We’ve developed the best arboreal systems in the industry. Some of our accomplishments:
- Premier canopy tour locations in Alaska
- Over 25,000 participants served, free from major incidents
- Designed and installed the first twin-line system in the U.S.
- Designed and installed the first "silent" zip-line systems
- Highest retained elevation of any arboreal course in North America - 80 to 100 feet high for over a kilometer!
- Patent-pending designs for tree structures and walk-way bridges
Built with harmony, precision and balance.
